problems with paper

For my paper right now it is now coming along because I have come up with a strong thesis. I still am having trouble with getting the full 12 pages that includes enough relevant research. I also think my paper is not so much sounding like a research paper but a history paper and I know I need to work on that as well.

  1. To be honest, relevant research seems to be the easier thing to find and interject into a paper. It is the irrelevant information and slightly useful resources that have to be molded to make sense. I am writing a thesis using history as a backdrop as well. An important thought to remember while writing the paper is that a point is being argued. While the history literally makes the argument, take the position of how that would affect modern day life. Is there a parallel of a situation that happened recently that could've happened differently if knowledge of the events were obtained? How would it affect anyone personally?

  2. explain everything that you think the reader should be well informed about. That might add some bulk to your paper, along with taking a strong standpoint on what side of your topic you are for and backing up your stance with your research.

A little bit of history is OK... If it pertains to your topic and argument, without getting too carried away with detail, then you're probably fine. But definitely use the bare minimum of the history side just to set up your argument.

  3. You could look at other sources from the same authors or websites to see if there are any other sources

  4. The key to avoid it sounding like a historical research paper is to focus on the argumentative aspect. This starts with your thesis. Make sure you are taking a stand on an issue. This should be clear from the beginning, and all your research and history will back up and strengthen your argument. Everything should tie back to your claim. If your essay does this, then it should read more as an argumentative essay than merely a research paper. A reverse outline might help you (see my comment on Alice's post for this).
