Annotated Bibliography on Caffeine

Claim: Caffeine beverages have been around for centuries and the concerns about the effects of caffeine have followed. Today, companies have come out with more energy drinks and the question has been raised about regulating the amount of caffeine in drinks. Regulating the amount of caffeine would be beneficial because high levels of caffeine can be dangerous.

Carpenter, Murray. “A Century Later, Jury’s Still Out on Caffeine Limits.”The New York Times. 28 March 2011.

The article in the New York Times titled, A Century Later, Jury’s Still Out on Caffeine Limits addresses the issue of high caffeine levels in beverages from the past to present. The focus of the article is about how there was a trial in 1911 against Coca-Cola. Coca-Cola was on trial because there was a concern about the levels of caffeine in their product. Research was done by Harry Levi Hollingworth ,a psychology professor, for the trial and he found that caffeine did have an effect on humans and one effect included a “Gradual rise of spirits till 4:00. Then a period of exuberance, of good feeling. Fanciful ideas rampant.” The conclusion of the trial was that the case was dismissed and this issue is still debated today. This article was detailed about the trial and how the issue of caffeine levels is still a concern. In supporting the claim, the professor’s research would be useful, but the other details of the trial would not be helpful. The article mentioned that Harry Levi Hollingworth compiled his research into a book called The Influence of Caffeine on Mental and Motor Efficiency and this would be a great follow up source.

i liked this paper, because i got to choose some thing that i am really passionate about in life. but at the same time i learned a lot of things that i did not know before. i am not sure what my question for my big research paper will be but i am defiantly going to go in the same direction of what i am doing now with role America played.
yes i have done a annotative bib once in high school.

liked

i thought this assignment was a little more tough than the last one... I had a bunch of good sources, but seemed to run out of things to say. Maybe because I didn't expand enough? Maybe because every final under the sun is happening today it seems like. anyways I ended up two pages short with a personal narrative as a conclusion. Ive done MLA bibs before... but not by myself in a long time. Easy bib rules.

Interesting

When I started with the essay I didn't think I would be exposed to so much information about the simple drink, coffee. And the old and rich traditions that I heard from some people around me were really fascinating. But I couldn't put all of it in, will be a 20 page paper. Maybe I could use it in future research works I want to write on.
Overall I had a good time.

Reflection of the Exploratory Essay

For the exploratory essay I enjoyed working with a nontraditional way of writing. I liked the fact that I got to put more voice into this paper. This paper helped me with getting to a topic that was interesting in alternative medicine. I felt this paper was easier to flow with.

Some of the aspects of the paper that were difficult to work with was the length. I felt I had a stooping point that was satisfying to me, but it did not work with the page length requirement. This challenged me, but I felt I was lacking ideas by the end of the paper.

My focus for my paper is the benefits of Ayurveda alternative medicine.
This essay was a really challenged me. for good or bad I will walk away from this being a much storonger writer. I will pay more attention to my work cited paper because trying to go back and find articles and author names was almost impossibble. I dont have much experience with abbotated biblographys, but look forward to the challenge.

Exploratory Essay, Explored?

Overall I enjoyed the fresh approach to writing this essay. I helps set up an argument as well ass it let me dig into my subject matter and find a more specific topic I am interested in pursuing. I started to pursue the history of micro brewing and how the beer industry was formed when I came across an article about the introduction of the aluminum can that would eventually replace a lot of glass bottles. This reminded me about how passionate I am with learning about recycled products and the energy spent in building new things as opposed to recycled items.

I really do not have any experience with annotated biographies.
What I liked most about writing this paper is that we didn't really have any boundaries when deciding what to write about. I liked that the paper wasn't like a reguar research paper

Things I didn't like about writing this paper would have to have been the length requirement, of course. I'm still having trouble trying to get the full amount of pages in without being too wordy and without putting useless information in.

I think the main focus for my research will be how has racism changed over time.

3/17

I actually found the essay to be a good essay for me to write because it involved me researching about Nano Robotics and I actually feel like i really got into the essay and writing my ideas into the paper, good or bad. Well i dont really know what can be the next possible topic as long as there are sources i can site then im fine with writing a peper. I really dont know what else to write about.... i blank in the mind. to early.. wondering of. A new idea for a paper would be  i dont know leave it for the rest of the class to decide.. :)

Today's Thoughts on Exploratory Essay

I like the overall process of writing the exploratory essay. However, I need more time to write a strong conclusion for my paper. Even without a good conclusion, the rough draft of my exploratory essay is seven full pages long; so that is fine for now. That said, I'm not yet sure where I want to go with a new question for my research. I chose a discussion concerning international intellectual property rights as the subject for my exploratory essay, and that is a lot of information to take in. So I need more time to think about new, valid questions that I want to explore for the issue. In addition, I have already completed assignments that required an annotated bibliography, therefore I am not worried about the added work...

Exploratory Essay

I liked that I was able to turn all of my research into a more personal paper rather than worrying about being formal throughout my writing. I disliked that my topics were kind of scattered, it all had to do with eyes, but really my questions were so diverse and i felt it was difficult to conclude my paper without a connection to my initial question. I think I'm going to focus my research on diseases that cause people to go blind because there's only so much you can explain about how an eye works and what provides color vision verses night vision.

Did you hear that?

The thing I liked most about this paper was the fact that I could choose what I wanted to research and how I could research it. Just with this essay, I already found some great info for the final paper and what I can leave out of the paper. The biggest thing I didn't like about the paper was the length. I would have been fine with a five page paper, but with an additional two pages, I started to run out of ideas at page seven. If I hadn't of been watching tv at the time, I would have had less on my last page (thank you TV info). My first focus was mainly how ghosts strarted to become prominent in American society but found there wasn't much good and unbiased information from statistics. I then went to the big picture of if ghosts do exist and found much  more info, even though it was still biased it was good. As for the annotated bibliographies I think I can easily do that, but it'll get boring real fast with the amount of sources I have.

The end result

I spent an entire week proof reading my essay before today. I feel as if I could have provided more information to make it stronger but I know that I tend to over analyze everything I do so this is probably the case. The thing I disliked the most about my essay was the paragraph I included about an article I stubled across in the Auraria Library date base. I feel like it was good I touched base on the article but I also feel like it could have ruined my entire essay. I decided to leave it there incase I was wrong so I guess I will find out once I get it back. There were a lot of things I did not touch base on in my essay because I felt like I had limited space to talk about every detail and information found on my topic. For the next paper I will include the research subjects I did not include in this paper to make it more interesting and educational. I will try to look up more articles on the Auraria library website because they did have a lot of useful information I did not use in this essay. My experience with the annotated bibliography was quite inetresting. I am not one hundred percent sure if I wrote it right. I tried to mimic other annotated bibliographies, that was very helpful but still not sure if it is correct. I tend to learn from my mistakes and take contructuve feedback well so I am anxioud to see what my grade and feedback will be.

Exbroatory essay

Likes/ dislikes:
Its was kinda a strange paper to write about, because I had no idea on how to format the paper so i got confused at some points, but I really liked learning new things about my subject, and narrating my actions.

New questions:
Uncertainites of Science and how they affect human beings

Experience with annotated bibliographies:
I have none, besides the practice example we did in class the other day, hopefully it will be easy.

Eggs

I think the paper itself was pretty cool, it was just weird to narrate it. I prefer to do research papers. I didn't really like narrating the paper, I just it seemed like I was writing in a journal. For my new question, I will ask, how has the world been affected by plastic surgery, and what the future holds for it. I have used bibliographies, but I have no idea what an annotated bibliography is. But I guess I'm going to find out.

eieio

I liked the concept of this assignment, and found it helpful to write about my researching process as I went along. I didn't like that another week was added to the assignment. That paper wasn't difficult to write and so adding a week seemed too long.
My new question isn't necessarily definitive at this point, but I think it will be something pertaining to the either the economics of biodynamic farming or about the rise in small scale/local farming.

Reflection of Exploratory Essay

I liked the progressive nature of how the essay flows from one point to another via connection. That ideas are not extraneously pulled out of thin air in a hope that somehwere down the line a connection can be made. It was also relieving to know that requiring more than a specified number of sources covering a variety of different legitimate media stretched my brain and made me focus on quality over quantity.

My focus on research on this topic from here toward the argumentative thesis still aligns with what I had original interest in which was what happened in America to allow something like the Trail of Tears to happen. I may shift my focus more toward the legislation passed or the major political figureheads, yet it was the law (or lack thereof) that seemed to incite unrest.

I have no formal experience with annotated bibliographies. I have covered the background information on where it is used and the general format. However, this knowledge has never been translated and it has been 4 years since my last experience with an English course.

Paper evaluation

Likes/dislikes about essay:
I liked how I was able to analyze different research I found on fad diets and kind of develop my own opinion about them. I was able to come up with some good theories to answer my question of why people fall for fad diets. Something I did not like about my paper was the last couple of paragraphs--I was not able to come up with as many questions as I did in the first part of my paper.

New questions/focus for research:
I came up with some questions about self-image and the knowledge that people have about dieting. I think I could focus my research on something like the relationship between self-esteem and weight struggles.

Experience with annotated bibliographies:
I took an English class last year at CU Boulder and I remember doing an annotated bibliography there for my research paper. From what I remember, I had to find sources and write a paragraph basically summarizing what the source said.

Exploratory Essay

I enjoyed writing this essay mostly because it was easy to narrate the process. It made making connections between sources easier, and I found it to make the information more valuable. It also taught me how to look for a new source. Rather than just grab everything I can find about my topic I was directed by the questions being asked which make it a more refined search. My reasearch was initally about the Starbucks corporation, but now I am thinking that I would focus more on the health problems or benefits from caffeine or coffee in general. Going just upon the surface of it in my paper was the most interesting for me, and there is alot to be discovered by this substance.

As for experience with annoted bibliographies, I dont really have any. I was never asked to do them before, but from the looks of it, its a good way to describe the sources you used in order for someone else to jumpstart their own research.

Three titles that I can think of for my essay would be something simple that would let the reader know what I'm writing about that way they know what it is before they even read the first line.
 1) Biochemica engineering
then i noticed that this title was to broad and well i would have to cover a lot of things so now I chose
2) Nano Robotics
which makes my topic a lot more clear and easy for people to guess what my essay would be about. I dont really have a third title but perhaps their may be other good titles that i can choose. :)

Suffering for science and food for thought

Animals suffer from excruciating scientific tests daily and because they cannot speak up humans have to speak up for them. In this world animals are taken advantage of, they are ripped out of their homes, put into cages, abused, killed or tortured by people in the world. Is it fair to have people experiment on animals? Are there alternatives that could perhaps replace animal subjects in laboratories? The answer for these questions is a solid YES. Because the vegetarian and vegan population is growing, restaurants and manufacturers are now offering animal free products ( house hold products, beauty products, etc.) for those who choose to live an animal cruelty free life. There are certain European countries that prohibit the use of animals in scientific experiments. The U.S is the biggest country to freely report the use of animals in labs and many animal activists are fighting to make that stop. Because of the growing vegetarian community as mentioned above, scientists have come up with alternatives to exclude animals in certain types of tests.

Learning about animal testing can make an animal lover change their diet to a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle. Because I am a vegetarian I have decided to write about the connection between animal testing ans vegetarianism/veganism. The title I had originally chosen for this paper was " Animal Testing and Vegetarianism- Information about animal testing and vegetarians" but then I thought about it and decided to change it to " Suffering for Science and Food for Thought.-A paper regarding animal testing and vegetarianism"
